Solar Asset Strategy for Pune-Shirur Elevated Highway

A proposed 2.80 MWp grid-connected solar PV strategy for the 52 km Pune–Shirur Elevated Highway corridor in Maharashtra. The project adopts a two-phase asset utilisation model, deploying solar capacity during the construction phase to reduce diesel generator dependency and subsequently relocating the solar assets to permanent operational infrastructure. The proposed system targets approximately 4.20–4.25 million kWh of annual electricity generation to support highway lighting, toll plazas and associated facilities. The strategy focuses on renewable energy integration, efficient asset utilisation and long-term operational cost reduction.

Solar Asset Strategy for Pune-Shirur Elevated Highway

Engineering Scope & Technical Execution

Project Overview

The proposed Solar Asset Strategy covers a 52 km elevated highway corridor between Pune and Shirur, Maharashtra. The concept involves deploying a grid-connected solar photovoltaic system to support construction-phase electricity requirements and subsequent highway operations.

Proposed Solar Capacity

  • Proposed installed capacity: 2.80 MWp.
  • Target annual energy generation: approximately 4.20–4.25 million kWh.
  • Assumed Maharashtra solar yield: 1,500 kWh/kWp/year.
  • Proposed system architecture: Grid-connected solar PV with a two-phase asset utilisation strategy.

These figures represent the strategic proposal and remain subject to detailed engineering and technical validation.

Phase 1: Construction-Phase Solar Deployment

During the construction phase, solar PV assets are proposed to be installed temporarily at suitable precast yards, casting beds and site offices.

The objectives include:

  • Reducing dependence on diesel generators.
  • Supplying renewable electricity for construction activities.
  • Improving utilisation of solar assets from the early stages of the project.
  • Reducing fuel-related operating expenditure and construction-phase emissions.

Phase 2: Long-Term Highway Operations

Following construction, the proposal envisages relocating the solar PV assets to suitable permanent operational locations, including:

  • Main toll plazas.
  • Slip-lane toll booths.
  • Highway lighting infrastructure.
  • Administration and surveillance facilities.

The proposed operational strategy includes grid integration and net-metering arrangements, subject to applicable regulations, utility approvals and the final electrical design.

Electrical Load Assessment

The strategic proposal identifies the following indicative connected loads:

  • Highway lighting: approximately 416 kW.
  • Main toll plazas and slip-lane toll booths: approximately 380 kW.
  • Administration, surveillance and additional load allowance: approximately 50 kW.
  • Indicative total connected load: approximately 846 kW.

The final load schedule and demand profile will require validation during detailed engineering.

Major Technical Considerations

  • Solar PV module and inverter selection.
  • Preliminary system sizing and energy-yield assessment.
  • Mounting structures and installation arrangements.
  • DC and AC electrical infrastructure.
  • Grid interconnection and protection systems.
  • Net-metering feasibility and utility coordination.
  • Solar asset relocation, reinstallation and recommissioning.
  • Applicable electrical safety requirements and relevant standards.

Project Objectives

The project strategy aims to improve renewable energy utilisation, reduce construction-phase diesel consumption, optimise long-term electricity costs and establish a repeatable solar deployment model for linear infrastructure assets.

Project Status

Strategic planning and proposed asset utilisation model. Final capacity, equipment configuration, execution schedule and commercial assumptions remain subject to detailed engineering, feasibility assessment and project approvals.
