Lithium cells naturally experience calendar and cycle degradation. Over a 15-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA), energy capacity will typically degrade to 70%–75% of nameplate rating if unmanaged. Engineers have two main strategies to sustain required capacity:
Strategy A: Initial Overbuilding (15%–20%)
Sizing the DC block 20% larger on Day 1. Simplifies initial civil and electrical balance of plant, but locks in capital expenditures at current prices and requires operating cells at low DoD during early project years.
Strategy B: Staged DC Augmentation (Years 5 & 10)
Leaving designated container pads, transformer spare capacity, and DC bus tie-ins ready. Augmenting with ~15% fresh capacity at Year 5 and Year 10 leverages future battery cost reductions and optimizes Net Present Value (NPV).
